And so it begins.
The rest of transfer orientation went well—no major hiccups, though I forgot to pay my portion of the alcohol fee. :P Which, to be honest, makes me feel bad that other people (presumably the coordinators) paid instead, but is not exactly the worst thing for me to forget to pay for. They didn't even tell me that I would have to before hand, or give me much of an option to opt out. Alas.
Classes started today—I shopped Underwater Archaeology (!), Japanese, Persian, Sounds of the World's Languages (a.k.a., Phonetics), and Archaeology and Palaeoecology of Coastal Environments. Not entirely sure how so much archaeology and anthropology ended up in my shopping schedule (I'm shopping Human Evolution tomorrow, and maybe some more). Persian, unfortunately, was mostly so that I could go to a class or two; there's no way I can take it. I know for sure that I am taking my thesis class and phonetics; and most likely Japanese, as well. I really want to take Japanese, but there is (sadly!) a part of me that still feels like foreign languages are a waste of time; by which I mean not that learning or knowing a foreign language is a waste of time (quite the opposite!) but rather that it takes up so much time in my schedule. I could take two semesters of Japanese ... or I could take Underwater Archaeology!
So ... I have another two weeks to decide, thankfully, but at this point I am hoping to add the Intro to GIS class, which will be helpful for my thesis and getting a job. That will be four classes that I am taking, so I might take or audit a fifth, which would most likely be Underwater Archaeology or Human Evolution. The Coastal Environments class looks AWESOME but is sadly a grad seminar, so it has a ton of reading and a ton of work, and I will not survive the semester if I try to take that as a fifth class. And I do need to graduate, eventually.
If I can't get in to the GIS class, because it is generally quite popular, I may take Experimental Design in Ecology, which also sounds interesting and useful but 1) is less directly applicable to what I want to do, and 2) is taught by a professor with a very monotonous voice, which is bad for me getting anything out of the class. Basically, I have to keep shopping. Yay for shopping! Hopefully this semester I will decide on classes a bit earlier than usual, because changing at the last minute (Literally. LITERALLY.) is not very fun.
And in other news, we had dinner with the Juggler, Fortitude, Temperance, and the Roommate. We also invited the Emperor, but she couldn't come. I'm not sure how much longer I am going to actually invite the Emperor to things, because she never says yes, and never offers her own suggestions as to what to do. It mostly bugs me because I think the reason she's basically stopped talking to us is because she thinks we don't work hard enough—probably because at the end of last semester, for one, both the Roommate and I had "goals" to finish our papers by a certain date, so when that date arrived and the Emperor saw us in the dining hall, she said "You must be glad to be done!" and we said, "Uh ... no, we haven't finished yet." She had the most precious Oh-my-God-seriously? expression on her face, like she couldn't possibly believe that anyone she was friends with would fail to accomplish their goals. And since she tells me I have ADD nearly every other time I see her, I find it a little obnoxious that she's surprised I didn't finish when I thought I would.
But that's okay! Now I don't have to worry about talking about fun things in front of her. :) Though it is a bit depressing after everything we went through together, or mostly that we watched her go through and tried to be supportive about.
